JOHN FERNANDES: John Fernandes is one of the talented young drummers in Goa today. Hailing from Maddel, Margao, he is the son of Francis Antonio and Caitana Fernandes.

His father was an ace drummer himself, playing for the ‘Young Stars of Goa’ theatre group, brass bands and the popular ‘Radio Serenaders’. As a young boy, John would accompany his father, playing the bass and snare drum at feasts and funerals while simultaneously completing his education at the Holy Spirit High School, Margao.
At the age of 8 years, John played for a ‘tiatr’ by Rocky Dias. This was an amateur show, but also the beginning of a long career. First there were the village dramas and soon the commercial stage. In ‘Battli’ a non-stop show by Pascoal Rodrigues, the young man got his professional break.

John has played for well known music directors like Josinho, Carlito, Augusto de Panchwadi, Agnelo Dias, Anthony de Velim, A Moraes, John de Nuvem, Thomson, Babush and Norman Cardozo and for dramas by directors like the late C Alvares, late Rosario Rodrigues as well as Felcy, Jose Rod, Tony Dias, Simon Gonsalves, Filipe and Janet, Ben Evangelisto, Milagres de Chandor, Mini Mario and many others. Lately he has played for ‘Mahanand’ the impressive presentation from Tony Dias, a ‘tiatr’ titled ‘Denvti’ by Comedian Ambe and is presently playing for ‘Goem Soddun Paulem Ghanttar’ the hit, from Peter-Roshan, that is running to packed houses.

John is a regular in bands that back the singers, for audio albums. He plays for recordings of Manfa Music, with Chris Corriea and other music directors. Edwin D’Costa gave him his first break for audio recordings and since then, there have been numerous albums, some recorded in Mumbai, for which John has backed with some stylish drumming, especially the rolls. He has played for dance bands like Genesis, Major Strings and is presently playing for Saby’s (of the Wings) new band. With great pride he mentions of the musical shows he played for, the late M Boyer and also for the legendary, late Chris Perry, who had presented a grand musical evening at the Kala Academy open air hall, Panaji.

John is quite happy with the progress made in music, for dramas. By emulating the dedication shown by the veteran musicians, there is even more scope for improvement. Taking a break from professional music, John was abroad for some time and worked at the ‘Pizza Hut’ as a pizza maker. Presently he is full time into music and lives with his wife Maria. We wish you all success John and a great career in drumming.

Workshop on ‘Kantaram’ organized by Kala Academy Goa & TAG

Workshop on ‘Kantaram’ organized by Kala Academy Goa & TAG

A workshop on stage songs of tiatr ‘Kantaram’ was organised by Kala Academy Goa in collaboration with Tiatr Academy of Goa (TAG) on 8th August 2010 at the Black Box, Kala Academy, Panjim. ‘Kantaram’ is a part and parcel of a tiatr, which also constitutes its uniqueness.

‘Kantaram’ are of different types such as Solos, Duets, Trios, Quartets etc. and all these songs of different types must be included in the tiatr. However in the recent times it has been observed that variety of ‘kantaram’ which form the uniqueness of tiatr, is not maintained by the present day tiatr artistes. Hence, the workshop was organised.

Tomazinho Cardozo, President of TAG explained in detail the various types of ‘Kantaram’ such as Solos, Duets,Trios, Quartets etc. He brought out the exact nature of Duets, Trios, Quartets and stressed upon the fact that the lyrics should be interactive in nature and every singer should be projected as a different character. He also stated that ‘Kantaram’ which are sung together with different voices and which can be termed as choral songs also form the part of a tiatr. Yet another type of song which is sung by different people and in which there is no interaction is also a part and parcel of the package of ‘Kantaram’ for a tiatr.

During the interaction, various participants asked for clarification and also gave valuable suggestions in order to dispel misunderstanding regarding Solos, Duets, Trios, Quartets etc. in the minds of singers and lyricists.

Dr. Pandurang Phaldessai, Member Secretary of Kala Academy in his address stated that such type of workshops are very valuable because it helps in better understanding of Tiatr, its Song & Music and also helps in the development of Tiatr, its Song & Music. He further stated that the concept of Duets, Trios, Quartets and choral songs as discussed in the workshop will be made applicable in the forthcoming Tiatr Festival and Konkani Kantaram Festival to be organised by Kala Academy shortly. He appealed to all the participants to implement the new changes effectively and make Goan ‘Kantar’ more popular and interesting to listeners. Victor de Da, Member Secretary of TAG proposed the vote of thanks.

It's a Revenge Review not Tiatr Review

It's a Revenge Review not Tiatr Review

I, Comedian Agostinho, got to know you (I repent it now), for the first time, when I came to perform in Rosary Ferns' Tiatr at Kuwait. At that time, you were introduced to me as Veronic. But now in 2010, just as Temudo has become Temuz, the years have taken its toll and Veronic has transformed into VIKH (Poison). That poison has contaminated your whole body and changed you to a RABID MAD DOG. Your actions are enough proof, as you bark at anybody and everybody, for no valid reason whatsoever, even at religious catholic priests.

Hope you know that, or else confirm it soon, that your sole identity is, and you are known as a RABID MAD DOG in the whole of Kuwait.

Your dirty conscience started pricking, the moment you saw an almost houseful audience present for my hit show ADVOGAD. If there were very less spectators, you would have been very happy and would have enjoyed your sadistic pleasures from the core of your rotten heart.

The timings of my tiatr coincided with the live telecast of one of the best matches of the World Cup, between Brazil and Portugal , teams which are cherished and have a huge fan following amongst Goans. In spite of this, I take pride in revealing to a mad jealous dog like you, that my show was patronized by the likes of Mr. Gaspar Crasto, Mr. Britto, and scores of football lovers and football players themselves. This goes on to prove my worth. If any other Tiatr was to be staged that day at the same time instead of ADVOGAD directed by Kalcho Porcho Director, the ground reality would have been totally different.

I don't rest on my laurels. But it is a proven fact and a record (Please Rabid dog, note it down on your personal diary in red ink) that I am the only Konkani tiatrist to perform 18 times at Kuwait, 4 times in my Tiatrs viz., SIR, POLICE I , POLICE II & ADVOGAD and the rest of the 14 times under different Directors, including Kuwait based Directors viz. Laurente Pereira, Mario de Majorda, Rosary Ferns, Comedian Philip, Jose Rod, KGTS, etc.

Undoubtedly, this speaks volumes that my comedy and my Tiatrs are liked and relished by Goan Tiatr lovers and the legion of my fans, to whom I am grateful from the bottom of my heart, and thank them profusely for the support, love and affection showered upon me. May God bless them all. With all this support, I can tread like a Giant and crush a Rabid Mad Dog like you under my feet.

Getting back to the so called 'Review', let me clarify that my troupe and myself arrived at 2 p.m. and were all set to perform by 3.30 p.m. Since the venue was new to most of the people, they were finding it difficult to find the same and were phoning my organizers that they are on their way. As such, I had to wait for the contractor's green signal and hence the delay. This fact was announced a couple of times by your good friend, Mr. Rosary Ferns, which you failed to hear, understandably, because you are turning deaf due to your old age. How about sponsoring you a HEARING AID DEVICE?

And yes, sadly, the GOAN STD TIME was, is and will be followed for ages by our susegado Goans. It is beyond our realm to change it, try as we may. And I can assure you, cent per cent, that the GST will be followed at your last voyage, your funeral, wherever held on Earth.

Regarding the storyline; Rape IS NOT a cheap topic. It is a hot topic, as there have been so many rape and murder cases in Goa , which have brought a bad name to all upright Goans. Through my humble writing, I have tried to show its ill effects on the victims and to educate and expose the unscrupulous ADVOGADS who try to shield such perpetrators. For selfish people like you, who bury their heads in the sand like ostriches and who believe in 'One for oneself, God for all', rape is a cheap topic, but it will become hot one day if someone rapes your immediate kin or your aged wife.

I humbly agree that I am an immature Director. But I can shout from my rooftop, that, in spite of being an immature Director with only 8 productions, I have scored a double century within a span of 13 months from its release, my super duper hit POLICE, a feat rarely achieved, not even by more mature directors.

I may be immature, but not an educated illiterate like you, who is turning senile by the passage of time.

Before I clarify about the songs, please identify my actors correctly, or get your vision corrected. You called JAJU Juju and Salu D'Souza was reported as Salu Faleiro, so much for your corrupt knowledge !!

The Trio on religious amity, sung by JAJU-XAV-SAL, was my subject but composed by Xavier Gomes. The Duet sung by Selvy-Anita was also my idea, composed by Francis de Tuem, and once again, the Duo sung by Roma & Steffi was also my subject, penned by Benny Rebello.

I state without fear, that the story idea, writing and direction is totally my baby. Every word in the comedy sequences is my property. I am the father of my tiatr 'ADVOGAD', and the credit should rightly go to the father first, then the children. No child takes birth without parents, one father and mother, not in your case though, because your words and actions make it amply clear that you were born of several fathers, or else have a DNA check and let us know the results.

I reiterate that I have never begged of any contractors to stage my shows, neither in the Gulf nor in the UK. My original contractors in Kuwait have always been Chequino, Mario and Tom. Xavier approached me quite a few times asking for the contract of my tiatr. I requested my above mentioned contractors, and with their permission and blessings, allowed Xavier to stage the show. It is the contractor's sole responsibility to do all the arrangements, legal formalities etc. in order to stage the show.

Everyone does it with profit motive, there is no gain without pain. I appreciate and thank Xavier for his efforts wholeheartedly. You have done the same, but with an ulterior motive. You did get free passes for yourself, your greedy family and your cronies, and you expect more next time, stinking parasite.

There is no question about my 'disappearance'. You could have said that if I had disappeared without performing. But, as usual, you are in a dirty habit of fabricating and making cock and bull stories.

I had to leave early, and I duly explained it to my artistes, only to accompany Comedienne Anita, who had to rush as she had to join B.Ed. classes. My good friends, Comedian Philip and Mario fully agreed to see to my artistes' comforts, which were mutually agreed beforehand. I asked some of my artistes if I could accommodate them at your place, but they flatly refused, thank Heavens for that. They said, they would rather spend their days at the Kuwait Church Compound, then in a stinking flat belonging to an ungrateful pervert like you. So much for your reputation! ! !

It is indeed intriguing to see you putting your fingers in every pudding and pie. You criticize every tiatrist inspite of being a NON ENTITY in this field. Script a Tiatr and stage it yourself before teaching us the traits. Show us if you have BA_ _ S, or else come down to Goa and I will employ you as a stage Helper (you will need training even for that), and I will pay you your dues.

A few more words about your 'Revenge Review'. Your good friend Mr. Rosary Ferns was supposed to sing a solo, which he did. He was informed well in advance about his slot, but even after my Musicians played the Intro about 4 times, Rosary was nowhere and people were booing, thus leaving a bad remark on my show. What kept you back in writing about this? A bottle of liquor? A few Dinars? Or a gift for your wife?

Before I wind up, please let me know if you have any personal grudge against me. Going by the things that you wrote, it is definitely personal vendetta and you have an axe to grind. As far as my memory goes the only grudge can be that you had requested me to bring 500 pork sausages and 4 packets of salted cashew nuts whilst coming to perform for Rosary's show. I brought the same eatables for you, but when I asked for the money, you fumed and got wild. Can this be the reason? You were pally with me before that, but fell off with me for reasons better know to you, which is typical of you, changing colours like a chameleon.

Your attitude and behavious towards others smells of polluted blood in your veins. Although you are a Rabid Mad Dog, you are not even of a top breed like Poms, Alsatian, etc. But a mixed blooded PARIAH DOG roaming the streets. The day is near when the MUNICIPAL AUTHORITIES will shoot you and leave you to rot. R.I.P.

Excellent response Comedian Agostinho Temudo. May your action be an inspiration to all other Tiatrists who are abused by such bloggers - in the name to gain some cheap fame as well to pleasure their croonies - as you rightly put it for 'sadistic pleasures' even after getting free entry passes.]

Khell, Khell-Tiatr & ‘Non-Stop Drama’

Khell, Khell-Tiatr & ‘Non-Stop Drama’

What is Khell, Khell-Tiatr and ‘Non-Stop Drama’? This is a question that is asked by many lovers of Khell-Tiatr. The question has arised becauses the present artistes stage Khell-Tiatrs and Tiatrs which do not conform with the traditional Tiatr as well as Khell-Tiatr.

In order to understand the exact nature of Khell, Khell-Tiatr and ‘Non-Stop Drama’, the Tiatr Academy of Goa (TAG) called a meeting of veteran Khell artistes which was attended by Patrick Dourado, Vitorino Pereira, Ligorio Fernandes, and the present Khell-Tiatr artistes namely Roseferns and Mario Menezes.

According to these veterans, the Khell was always performed on the ground and hence it was known as ‘Zomnivoilo Khell’. It was truly a form of folk art. ‘Zomnivoilo Khell’ consisted of three ‘Parti’ (playlets) and each ‘Part’ (playlet) comprised of 8 to 10 small songs i.e. ‘Cantos’. The entire story of the ‘Khell’ was narrated to the audience through the songs. Each ‘Canto’ consisted of 2 verses and one chorus. Each ‘Part’ would be of 45 mins to 60 mins duration. The comedy was related to the story of the ‘Parti’.

Somewhere in the late 1950s, Antonio Moraes performed the Khell on a stage. Since then, the ‘Zomnivoilo Khell’ came to be known as ‘Khell-Tiatr’.

Each Khell-Tiatr consisted of two ‘Parti’ having two different themes-one before the interval and the second after the interval. Each ‘Part’ consisted of 10 to 12 songs i.e. ‘Cantos’ and the story of the ‘Khell-Tiatr’ used to be told through the songs. Many a times very few dialogues were said and mostly these dialogues were based on the lyrics of the songs. A ‘Khell-Tiatr’ of two ‘Parti’ can be actually referred to as a musical drama having two different stories. Comedy in the Khell-Tiatr was related to the stories of the two ‘Parti’

In 1976, Rosario Rodrigues, for the first time satged a Khell-Tiatr by setting the entire plot on just one theme instead of two ‘Parti’. He called this presentation of one story from the beginning to the end as Non-Stop Drama. On an average it had 20 to 30 ‘Cantos’ in the beginning. The comedy was fully interwoven with the theme of the play.

As per this information from the veteran Khell-Tiatr artistes, it is clear that the roots of Khell-Tiatr or ‘Non-Stop Drama’ lie in the traditional folk drama called ‘Zomnivoilo Khell’.

In reality, Khell, Khell-Tiatr or ‘Non-Stop Drama’ all means a musical drama which exists in all other languages. The veteran artistes who attended the meeting requested TAG to make efforts to preserve this musical form of Konkani drama called ‘Khell-Tiatr’.

TAG will make efforts to preserve and promote the Khell-Tiatr in its traditional form.

Nurture Konkani cinema

Nurture Konkani cinema

Kudos to Mauro Fernandes for his letter “Konkani cinema” (May 29).
While applauding Laxmikant Shetgaonkar’s masterpiece ‘Paltadacho Munis’, he has rightly opined that Konkani films, if properly nurtured and promoted, may churn up a Satyajit Ray or Adoor Gopalakrishnan in near future. But to reach such a glorified stage, special efforts are required from all quarters.

The Government of Goa should encourage the upcoming film-makers by offering them soft loans to come up with Konkani films. Proper infrastructure like studios and other technical facilities need to be put in place by the authorities or offer a favourable ambience to the private concerns so that they can invest in the business of films.

Tax-relaxation and compulsory screening of Konkani films in theatres across Goa are a must to support local industry so that they do not get wiped away by the economic powerhouse Bollywood. Also the directors and producers should also see to it that instead of mimicking their Hindi counterparts, Konkani films need to be based on the ethos of soil and culture of Goa. An industry can never prosper by ignoring the basic traits of the culture of the region concerned. The common Goans should also religiously patronise the Konkani films, instead of succumbing to the crude Bollywood culture.

India is unique and colourful just because of its regional and cultural diversities and films are nothing but living and permanent documents of such richness. If Konkani films get established on a firm ground, it will add another feather to the colorful cap of India.

Konkani cinema

I am among the few fortunate Goans who has watched Laxmikant Shetgaonkar masterpiece, Paltadacho Munis, and I must say those of you who have not seen this film have missed one hell of a movie. Truly, it is unbelievable that a film produced in Goa can be of such high caliber. This film is by far the best Konkani film ever.
The actors, the screenplay, cinematography, music etc is simply world class. Shetgaonkar, you have made Goa and Goans proud. Film making in Goa was a dying art due to financial constrains and lack of audience support. Young film makers like Rajendra Talak have tried their best to revive this form of art in Goa. With Goa being declared as the permanent venue for the International Film Festival of India and Government of Goa encouraging Goan film makers with various schemes,
I am sure many young Goans will take advantage of these schemes and produce good cinema. But as long the Goan public does not patronise Goan cinema, film making will be a loss and will only deter film makers. For the Konkani film industry to survive Goans have to wholeheartedly support it. The Tamil, Telugu or the Malaylam film industry is thriving because of the local support and the love of the public for their mother tongue.
We pay Rs 200 for a Hindi or an English movie at Inox, we go for tiatrs, why can’t we pay just Rs 100 and watch a Konkani film. I appeal to all Goans to watch this great film which has won laurels all over the world. You never know one day Goa might have our own Shyam Benegal, Adoor Gopalakrishnan or even a Satyajit Ray.
